São Paulo government includes flood prevention measures in the Paranapanema Lot concession

Requirement is due to the presence of 11 dams and road segments crossing environmental preservation areas

The concession for the Paranapanema Lot requires the future concessionaire to conduct a hydrological risk assessment across the entire road system and to develop an action plan with specific flood and erosion prevention measures. The highway project includes an estimated investment of R$ 4.7 billion, and the public notice is expected to be published in the first half of 2025.

This requirement by the Government of São Paulo is necessary because the Paranapanema Lot region includes 11 dams and segments that cross multiple environmental preservation areas. The study must be updated with each new construction and include field assessments, and must be submitted to the São Paulo State Transport Regulatory Agency (Artesp) every six months starting from the signing of the concession contract.

Climate resilience in the Paranapanema Lot project

According to the Government of São Paulo, the purpose of the climate risk mapping is to increase the project’s resilience to extreme weather events. The concessionaire must evaluate the effectiveness of the road’s drainage systems and identify critical areas that pose greater risks to the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

For these areas, drainage systems with adequate capacity for runoff volume and intensity must be implemented, aiming to retain rainwater, reduce hydrological risks, and mitigate impacts on the region. The goal is to ensure efficient management, improve road infrastructure, and protect ecosystems.

This study is essential not only to identify current issues but also to anticipate future scenarios in light of climate change.

The Paranapanema Lot project covers 282.3 km and benefits 13 municipalities in the Sorocaba region: Angatuba, Bernardino de Campos, Buri, Campina do Monte Alegre, Canitar, Chavantes, Ipaussu, Itaí, Itapetininga, Ourinhos, Paranapanema, Piraju, and Tejupá.
