São Paulo government authorizes expansion of Água Branca Station

With the improvements, the station will become one of the state's main mobility hubs

The São Paulo State Investment Partnership Program Board (PPI-SP), coordinated by the Investment Partnership Secretariat (SPI), has authorized the expansion of Água Branca Station. The investment will be R$1.3 billion and the work will be carried out by the TIC Trens concessionaire, which is responsible for implementing the Intercity Train (TIC) Northern Axis, which will connect the capital to Campinas.

The interventions include the installation of platforms to serve the trains of the TIC Eixo Norte and the future TIC Eixo Oeste (Sorocaba) and Line 9-Esmeralda. It is also planned to relocate Line 8-Diamante between Barra Funda and Lapa stations, allowing this branch to also access Água Branca.

With the improvements, Água Branca Station will be one of the state’s main mobility hubs, connecting with CPTM Lines 7-Rubi, 8-Diamante and 9-Esmeralda, Metro Lines 3-Red and 6-Orange, as well as the North (Campinas) and West (Sorocaba) TICs.

Given the complexity of the execution, the works will be phased: the first phase will see the integration of Line 6-Orange with Line 7-Rubi, scheduled for the second half of 2026; the second phase will see the integration with Lines 8-Diamante, 9-Esmeralda and the Campinas TIC; and the third phase will be the preparation for the connection with Line 3-Red and the Sorocaba TIC.

Eixo Norte Intercity Train

The project represents a milestone in the state’s mobility. With a length of 101 km, it will connect São Paulo to Campinas, with a 64-minute express journey between Barra Funda, Jundiaí and Campinas. The project also includes the Intermetropolitan Train (TIM), which will connect Jundiaí to Campinas in 33 minutes over 44 km. The concession includes the operation of CPTM Line 7-Rubi. The initiative is expected to generate more than 10,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs, benefiting 11 municipalities and positively impacting around 15 million people. The contract with TIC Trens was signed in May 2024.

The lines and trains belong to the state government. The concession is important for us to increase the network and investments. We are moving forward to build more lines and with more investment. For the population, it doesn’t matter whether it’s public or private. The important thing is that the train arrives on time and the contracts have mechanisms to improve service. > That was a quote from the conversation in May 2024.
